Welcome

Having diversified from farming some years ago our business started as a DIY livery yard... now, in 2021 we are a thriving stud covering 100 acres of grass land and offering a variety of sport horse stallions at stud. We also offer dummy training and semen freezing services alongside a complete package for your mare, from insemination to foaling.

We produce quality all-round and competition young stock year after year, from our own carefully selected mares. We also offer a range of livery services to over 50 clients, we run clinics, training events and competitions from our 3 outdoor arenas and indoor school.

This aside we pride ourselves on offering a personalised service where, as clients, you can rest assured that neither you nor horse will be treated as a number.

An insight into Brackenspa Stud

Our story

This year is the 17th birthday of our first youngsters. Our foundation stallion ‘Resident Gypsy’, who we sadly lost in 2014 had been in the family since birth and was the beginning of what you will see here today.

In 2005 our stud business took on a new role. We made the decision that an ultimate dream would be to continue the great Graf Magna line. An Uncle of David’s – John Pocklington – had imported this legendary sire from abroad and upon his death this line was lost from Lincolnshire. A mammoth trip was organised to Aberdeenshire were a young colt had been spotted – Athen’s Mumbo Jumbo. His sire Graf Fenmaster bred originally by Bryan Smith was by Graf Magna – the closest relative anybody had managed to locate.

On January 1st 2006 we welcomed the new stallions to our purpose built stallion block. The up and coming colt, Athen’s Mumbo Jumbo and the dressage star Graf Fenmaster. The yard was almost complete and the dream began.

Over the next few years other stallions were introduced, a super thoroughbred event stallion Athen’s Abercadabra by Abergwiffy, a Cremello Danish warmblood – Crown’s Wonder Pearl. A Pre-stallion – Macediona Mac and a Buckskin (Dun) and white – Multicolor II. Soon after the young Dunhill Desert Storm, a Perlino warmblood and Sartors Sniper a few spot Knabstrupper joined us as adolescent 2 years olds. Both are now firmly as favourites.

Our stallions

Our range of stallions continued to expand with the arrival of Samaii, Sambertino x Brentano II, the first British bred stallion to pass his 70-day performance test and become life approved for warmblood breeding throughout Europe. Renkum Valentino came back to the UK from Ireland and it was a pleasure to offer him a home for his retirement. Such classic and influential bloodlines.

Due to an unfortunate injury sustained by Crowns Wonder Pearl which has sadly ended his competition career we have been on the lookout for a new Cremello stallion. Kinsky Abraham, now 5 years old and recently licensed by the AES will be produced alongside our resident stallions. Although big shoes to fill he is already proving trainable and willing with a super attitude towards his work; we're very excited about this young man. With our yard full of a diverse range of stallions we hope to be able to offer a great choice but, alongside this, we offer a walk in service to a number of local stallions.

Stallions, facilities, experience and youngsters have gone from strength to strength but our aim remains the same. Providing a good quality stud service to all our owners, whether they be stallion owners or mare owners and to produce quality youngsters for all our clients to enjoy.

Our set up

Being a relatively new stud, all of our facilities have been purpose-built. From barn located foaling boxes with CCTV and mare foaling alarms to stocks aiding scanning, swabbing and insemination of mares. And from stock fenced paddocks, designated specifically for mares and foals to indoor and outdoor arenas, horse walker, solarium and wash box. We’ve pretty much got the got the lot including veterinary services on-hand with various packages available to meet all your needs.

We also have a large established livery yard on site with ample grazing and great facilities including three outdoor schools, an indoor school and there are also miles of hacking to be enjoyed along quiet country lanes.
